Shadow opened the door to his bedroom and shut the door furiously.  Strangely though, he calmly walked to the side of his bed, and carelessly threw himself onto it, burying his face into the cold clothed pillow.  Shadow lied there for a moment before bursting into tears.  He wrapped his arms around the pillow, as if the pillow was his comforter at the moment.

"Why?…How did this come to be?…"  Shadow's breath was caught in between his trembling words.  "It's all that faker's fault!!"  He sobbed even harder and louder.

Suddenly there was a flash of light in his room.  Shadow didn't seem to care to take notice of this.  Soon appeared his lover, Mephiles.  Mephiles walked towards Shadow's bed and slowly put a hand on his back and stroked tenderly.

"What's troubling you, love?"  Mephiles asked.

"Everything! That's what!"  Shadow yelled back, his voice muffled through the pillow.

Mephiles flinched at the sudden response, a very puzzled look in his green reptilian eyes.  He cocked his head a bit at him.

"That blue faker somehow found out about my relationship to you!"  Shadow lifted himself up to a sitting position to face the demon.  Shadow's eyes were slightly pink and bloodshot from the constant tears he shed.

Mephiles just continued to stare at the upset hedgehog.

"Now my life is ruined because he went mouthing my relationship among his stupid friends!   Now I'm the laughing stock to them!" He covered his face with his hands.

Mephiles remained silent, for he was processing what Shadow had just said.

"I've lost to many things already…I've lost Maria…I've probably been kicked off the team…and I've lost my closest friend Rouge! The one I could trust…the one I could rely on when I needed help…..but NO! She too laughed me off! I WAS WRONG!! I CAN'T TRUST ANYONE ANYMORE!!!"  Shadow gripped his quills and tugged on them forcefully, not caring if he made himself look even more dreadful.

Mephiles' eyes widened.  He knew about the relationship between the hedgehog and the bat, but he never expected this from the jewel thief.  He clenched his fists into a tight ball.

"How dare she…that stupid batgirl! She was never his friend at all!"  Mephiles' crystalline features began to emerge from him as anger built up inside him.

"There's…reason…live…" Shadow mumbled something incoherent, almost to himself.

Mephiles' ears perked up. "What?" he asked the ebony one to repeat himself.

"There's no reason to live anymore…"

"Stop this foolish talk Shad-" Mephiles' voice trailed off.

Something in his lover's hand caught his attention.  It looked like some sort of handle, but Mephiles instantly recognized what it was.

Because the blade gave off a sparkle from the sunlight that hit it.

Shadow moved his arm away from himself with the tip of the blade pointing towards his stomach.  He gritted his teeth, hand trembling with the knife in hand.

"I'D RATHER BE DEAD THAN BEAR THIS PAIN ANY LONGER!!" Shadow screamed, tears from anger rather than sorrow flowing from his eyes.

"SHADOW!"  Mephiles immediately swiped the knife away before Shadow could thrust it into himself.

Shadow suddenly lunged at Mephiles in a futile attempt to retrieve the weapon.  Mephiles effortlessly pushed him back on the bed while keeping the knife out of reach with his other arm.

"GIVE IT BACK!!" Shadow screamed.

The demon just crushed the knife between his powerful claws. He then pinned Shadow down on the bed forcefully by the wrists. Shadow weakly tried squirming out of his grasp.

"Are you insane!? What the hell is wrong with you!?" Mephiles' grip tightened, Shadow winced.

"I don't care about my worthless, pathetic life anymore!!" More angry tears streamed down his face.

"Shadow! Listen to-" Mephiles interrupted.

"No one cares about me! Neither do you!!"

Mephiles felt his heart shatter.  His eyes stung as he realized what the ebony hedgehog had just said.  "What!? Listen-" he started up again.

"JUST LET ME DIE!!!" Shadow screamed again.

"WILL YOU JUST SHUT UP AND LISTEN TO ME SHADOW!?!"  Mephiles struck Shadow across the face, almost leaving a hand print on his muzzle.

Shadow stopped his pointless rambling of killing himself, he just stared into his love's eyes.  They had a glossy look in them.  Shadow gasped.  Was Mephiles…..crying?

"Stop this foolish nonsense Shadow! How is killing yourself going to solve anything!?  Didn't you even stop to think about how I would've felt if you DID kill yourself!?  You say I don't care about you, but I do with all my heart Shadow!!"  Mephiles yelled, his voice in a very upsetting tone, and now letting his owns tears fall freely.

Shadow was speechless.

"I have nothing Shadow… You're the only ray of light in my life! Don't EVER take that away from me!! Please….Please….."  Mephiles released Shadow as he buried his face into his hands and sobbed.

Shadow remained in the same position from when he was pinned down by him.  He gently pulled Mephiles onto himself.  Mephiles blushed to the sudden action.  Shadow blushed also to the warm puffs of air hitting against his face.  He slowly pressed his lips to his in a soft, passionate kiss.  Mephiles' eyes widened, but eventually softened as his eyelids began to droop to the wonderful sensation of the moment.  He leaned more into the kiss to deepen it.  He didn't care that his tears were still streaming down his cheeks.  The tears were not ones of sorrow, no, they were ones of pure joy.


That was all the two hedgehogs ever wanted, was for someone to love them without end.


Even until after their deaths.
